FAQs:
Q1: May I apply for education facilitation (teaching) if I’ve never officially taught before?
A: Yes. Your experience and expertise in one or more creative areas (visual arts, performing arts, creative writing, technical theater, etc.) may qualify you to assist VAPA students in their exploration of arts & culture.
Q2: As an educator/former educator, may I apply to teach at a VAPA program with little creative arts experience?
A: Yes. Your experience educating grades K-8, in particular, are valuable. Pedagogy experience beyond grades K-8 is also acceptable. You will learn visual and performing arts while assisting the artist/educators with classroom management, etc.
Q3: What was the email address to which I send the required materials?
A. VAPA ACADEMY, (VAPA.ACADEMY.COLFAX@gmail.com)
Please be SURE to include all the required materials (see above “Requirements”)
Q4: What are the hours of operation for the VAPA Academy of Colfax?
A: During the school year, we operate as follows:
- Mondays – 1:30 to 6 p.m.
- Tuesdays – Fridays 2:30 to 6 p.m.
- Minimum days – 11:30 to 6 p.m.
A: During the Summer Program, we operate from 8 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- During your interview, you may communicate your interest in the days per week, number of hours per week, and morning versus afternoon availability. Spring & Summer Facilitators need not work a full 8-hour shift, but 8-hour shifts may be accommodated, if desired.
Scheduling is flexible and based upon each team member’s availability.
Q5: How much do these opportunities pay?
A: Above minimum wage.
- Currently, the VAPA program pays on an hourly basis, every two weeks.
- Associate Facilitators: $33 / hour
- Full Facilitators: $34 / hour
Q6: Would I be an employee or contractor?
A: Facilitators are employees.
Q7: If I am SAG/AFTRA or AEA, can I apply? What about if I have an agent?
A: Yes. As the VAPA Academy of Colfax is a public-school program, not an AEA/SAG/AFTRA training program, it is a viable employment opportunity in an artist’s/creative’s/technician’s area of knowledge that falls outside the scope of agents, agencies and unions. We have employed SAG/AFTRA/AEA actors as facilitators in the past without issue.
